Upingme Social Media Medicine (SM2)

Recently, there was a story in the Mainstream Media about a man who died because he could not afford the price of common antibiotic similar to Amoxycillin, a drug regularly prescribed to treat people with a tooth infection.

A course of Amoxicillin in tablet form (one hundred doses in capsules of 500mg) costs around $25.... twenty five Dollars.

This is not a large sum of money in the grand scheme of things, and it seems to us here at Upingme that it should be possible to create a system where people can voluntarily support doctors who need to supply prescription medicines to the needy. We did it. We created Upingme Social Media Medicine.

If every person who had a real concern about poverty and prescription medicines could press a button to supply medicine on deman, the people who needed prescription medicines but who cannot afford them would be able to get what they need on the spot.

In SM2, doctors are the only thing between you and the patient who needs a prescription. Doctors using SM2 can put out a call for any amount of money to fulfil a prescription that their patient needs. These are instantly posted through social networking tools, so that they can be quickly crowdsourced with Bitcoin.

This is how it works, step by step:

  1. Patient goes into doctors office
  2. Doctor makes diagnosis of toothache
  3. Doctor writes out prescription for Amoxicillin
  4. Doctor senses that patient may not be able to pay and asks, "Do you need help to pay for this?"
  5. Patient says, "Yes, I'm broke."
  6. Doctor says, "OK, don't worry, give me a moment."
  7. Doctor goes to his Upingme SM2 account and puts out call for $24.70 to pay for prescription
  8. We Tweet/JSON/RSS this request with a link to the Upingme SM2 page created by the Doctor
  9. Concerned humans read the Tweet/RSS and swarm small amounts to the page
  10. Users pay to the unique Bitcoin address for this request with one click
  11. When $24.70 goal is reached, request is automatically closed, Doctor collects Bitcoins.
  12. Doctor pays pharmacist directly
  13. Patient collects medicine from pharmacist
  14. Patient lives
  15. Next?!

The doctor does not need to give any details other than that he has a patient that has a need, what the names of the medicines are and how much they will cost. The patient's privacy is protected.

Your money is going directly to the listed cause without any bureaucracy, blocking infrastructure or bank transfer fees.

Because a doctor is making the request directly, no money is wasted collecting contributions in advance into pools to be parcelled out through a monolithic, bureaucratic system.

Doctors are amongst the most trusted individuals in society. When a doctor asks for prescription medicine for one of her patients, you can be sure that you are dealing with a genuine request that will directly help a real person at the moment that you press the 'send' button.

In sum, the benefits of this system are:

SM2 is transparent and 100% accountable. It directly connects caring individuals to doctors through the transparent transfer medium of Bitcoin, where all transactions are made in public. You can see your contributions and everything each doctor collects by inspecting the Bitcoin Block Chain yourself.

But aren't Bitcoins hard to buy?

Not anymore.

To help people get Bitcoins easily, we made Azteco a simple to use service where people can walk into any one of 20,000 retail outlets and buy Bitcoins through our easy to use and understand voucher system.

Azteco Vouchers work just like mobile phone top-up vouchers. You pay cash for a voucher, and then use our 16 digit code to redeem your bitcoins at our website.

With Upingme SMM and Azteco, it is now possible to make a donation to help people across the world who cannot afford prescription medicines, with only a few simple steps.
